Breast Enlargement

Susan K. Buenaventura, MD, FACS

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon/Cosmetic Surgeon  Alexandria/Fairfax

Breast enlargement (augmentation) is a surgical  procedure to enlarge and enhance the size and/or improve the shape of a woman's breasts with breast implants. Breast enlargement (augmentation) is a tremendous help to women who desire fuller breasts to improve self confidence, restore breast volume which has diminished  after multiple pregnancies, or have always had uneven breasts and wish to correct this, making clothing and bras easier to wear.

Reasons for Considering Cosmetic Breast Enlargement/Enhancement (Augmentation):

  • Increase breast size
  • Restore breast volume after pregnancy and nursing.
  • Equalize a difference in breast size (cup size) to gain breast symmetry.

General Procedure

Breast enlargement (augmentation) is usually performed in our fully accrediated Alexandria Virginia (AAAASF approved) outpatient surgical suite. A board certified anesthesiologist will care for you.   Implants may be silicone or saline (salt water) and come in many different sizes and shapes.  The right choice for you will be determined at the time of consultation and depends on your personal goals and your breast shape.   An thorough consulatation between you and Dr. Buenaventura is the best way to make an educated choice about what type of implant you desire.   As breast implants may need to be replaced or exchanged in the future, it is important to be sure you understand any risks involved with implants as well.

Prior to surgery, Dr. Buenaventura will make some surgical marks along the breasts.  During surgery, an incision is made beneath the breast  to create space for the implant.  The implant can be placed below or above the chest muscle depending on your particular case.  Surgery typically lasts about  1-2 hours.   The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures and the patient is placed in a bra with light dressings and brought to recovery room.

Recovery Process

You will be given medications to take at home and should take it very easy after surgery (rest quietly, listen to music, watch movies).    Following Dr. Buenaventura's instructions will help to speed up the healing process and prevent complications.   After your first post-operative visit, you will be given instructions on gradually increasing activity.
