Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure that uses lasers to create a new, smooth skin appearance.  The laser “ablates”, or destroys, the outer layers of skin which have been damaged by age, sun, acne, wrinkles, or pigmentation problems or spots. There are many types of laser and your individual skin type is important in choosing the right laser for you. The destruction of the older layers of skin prompts the body to generate a new layer of  healthier skin cells.  All lasers are not created equal!  We offer only Sciton laser procedures, and are amazed at the hybrid fractional laser, HALO, treatment and the results it can achieve with minimal downtime.

Reasons for Considering Laser Skin Resurfacing:

  • Reduce facial wrinkles and lines.
  • Improve sun-damaged skin.
  • Correct brown or red pigmentation problems
  •  Treat scars from acne or trauma
  • Tighten skin

General Procedure

For most laser procedures, you will use some numbing cream for 30-60 minutes.  Next, the face is cleansed of oils in order to prepare for the laser procedure.  The laser is then used to ablate various layers of skin in a precise and controlled manner until the appropriate depth of skin is reached and appropriate endpoint is achieved.   If deeper wrinkles are being ablated (TRL laser by Sciton) additional nerve blocks may be given ahead of time to keep you comfortable.

Recovery Process

Skin must be kept clean, moist and cool. Sun must be absolutely avoided.  The skin will be red initially and this will fade gradually, depending on how deep your treatment was.  Deeper laser treatments will take longer to heal.  Some discomfort should also be expected.

Patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions.   Recovery time varies with the type of resurfacing done (HALO, HALO PRO, TRL, micro laserpeel, nano laser peel by Sciton).  We will go into detail at the time of your conversation the specific care you require based on your skin type and the treatment performed.  Laser surgery is a complex and beautiful science, when performed by appropriately trained medical personnel.
