A breast "lift" or mastopexy, is a procedure to tighten up and reshape sagging breasts. After pregnancies or as a woman's body ages, skin loses its elasticity and breasts can become droopy. A mastopexy will remove the excess skin, but leave behind the breast tissue and elevate the breast as well as give it a more youthful, pleasing shape. It can also be combined with breast implants if desired.
Reasons for Considering a Breast Lift:
-
Elevate the breasts due to sagging caused by the effects of aging and gravity.
-
Firm up the breasts if they have lost substance due to pregnancy and nursing.
-
Reshape and reposition the nipple and areola if they are drooping or uneven.
-
You may need a breast lift following weight loss.
General Procedure
The breast lift surgical procedure usually takes about three hours. It is an outpatient procedure, performed under anesthesia. Excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incisions. Scars will be around the areola and under the breast.
If you would also like to increase your cup size, you may need to consider an implant with a lift. There are many types of incisions and techniques for a breast lift; the best one for you will depend on your body and what you are trying to achieve. Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging, may be candidates for modified procedures requiring less extensive incisions.
You will awaken in a bra with light dressings and can expect minimal discomfort and dramatic results.
Recovery Process
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and minimize the potential for complications. A surgical bra will be worn for the first two weeks. Once the bandages are removed, the patient will need to wear a specialized surgical bra for several weeks. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by avoiding excess activity the first couple of weeks.
