Dr. Buenaventura specializes in breast cancer reconstruction. She is a member of the INOVA Breast Care Institute (IBCI) and works closely with the cancer surgeons, oncologists and radiation therapists in her community. She believes patients shoud receive information on breast reconstruction prior to the cancer surgery. If you feel overwhelmed, you also have the option to delay the reconstruction until you have recovered from your cancer surgery.
When a patient needs a mastectomy, the breast reconstruction can often be done the same day! It can also be performed months later, after chemotherapy and radiation have been completed. There are many options for breast reconstruction. It is important to first creat a breast mound and then reconstruct the nipple and areola at a later date. Breasts can be reconsructed with implants, your own tissue, or a combination of both a flap and your own tissue. Reconstruction is tailored to you and your individual diagnosis, your body and your lifestyle. Never be aftraid to ask questions!
